February in The Garden: With the passing of my dad on January 22, my garden is playing a very important role in getting me through a very difficult time. It took me a few weeks before I even had any desire to do anything at all. I watched a lot of Star Trek and Marvel Universe Movies to take my mind off my broken heart. Here it is February 19th, and it’s still way to raw to get too much into it. Once I was able to get off the couch I went straight outside to a place that has always meant so much to me. A lot changes in a short time in the garden, even in winter when you think not much happens at all. Looking around at a few empty spots gave me the desire to garden again. Hubby jumped at the chance to get me off the couch, and out to the nursery and garden center. So here is a not so quick rundown of where the garden is at these days. I think it is coming along nicely with a bit of color and a few surprises I was not expecting.
Starting with my trouble spot in the garden, I am thrilled with how it is coming along. I scored an incredible deal at the clearance rack at Lowe’s. These beautiful pansies add a fantastic pop of color while I wait for the Lily of the Valley bulbs to pop up from under the fresh bark I just spread in this bed. The bark also does a great job covering the short stumps from the yellow Cannas that are at the back of the bed. By springtime there won’t be much bark viable with all the plants that are under it waiting for the right time to pop up. So much to look forward to.
Have you ever called a plant a doofus? That’s what I called this little little fella below. I planted it two years ago and hadn’t heard from it until now. I can’t remember exactly what plant this is, so I will have to update you later. She sure took her sweet time!
I have dedicated whole posts just to this magnificent plant, the Helleborus. You can see why I love them so much by these pictures. CALM THE HECK DOWN HELLEBORUS!!! No… please don’t. You’re amazing.
This sweet little yellow pom pom of joy is my latest acquisition. It is a Kerria j. Pleniflora. It does well in moist and dry soil, in sun or shade. HELLO AWESOME! You will do just great in my garden. I can never make up my mind where I want a plant to be, and the fact that she can be anywhere is beyond convenient!
Okay, I will spare you my chit chat on every plant. Instead I will leave you with some pictures I took just wandering around my yard. The Garden in February has been a huge help getting me through a very difficult time. I know I am not the only one who is hurting right now, and I am so sorry. I don’t have any wonderful advice to give or anything thought provoking to make you feel better. All I can say right now is I really like plants. They make me happy.
