January in The Garden: When last I wrote I was complaining about a spot in the garden that looked horrible during those cold winter months. It’s a spot i can see from my bedroom window and it was really bugging me.
I had just finished watching Will Ferrell’s movie Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga, and inspiration hit me. There is a scene in the movie where they show an elf village. PERFECT! Why do I always lean towards the absurd? Because, that’s why. I got the jigsaw out and started taking measurements. After an hour or so of plotting and planning, I came to the realization that I was nuts. I put the jigsaw away.
I went back to the trouble spot in the garden, and sat for a few minutes studying it. What did I not I like about this area? I didn’t like the elephant ears growing in the back, so I yanked them out. Then I sat back down. What else? I hated seeing so much of the fence, and decided the plant I had dug up from a different part of the yard would fit perfectly there. In it went. Then I sat back down. This went on for about two or so hours. Slowly but surely it was coming together. No elf houses needed. I knew in the Spring, the bald looking hydrangea that lived there would fill up, so I just needed to add a small splash of color to jazz it up a bit. Primroses!! They are cheap, come in a variety of colors, and sturdy as all heck.
I always tend to over complicate things, and sometimes I just need to sit with an open mind and take it one step at a time. Is the final product a huge difference? Not really, but it didn’t cost me an arm and a leg. Inspiration will hit me at some point that will make this spot in the garden MAGNIFICENT, but just not right now. The hydrangea will have plenty of room to grow, and there is not threat of elves moving in. Elves are a tricky bunch, and you don’t necessarily want them taking up residence in your backyard. As I learned in Will Ferrell’s movie, elves can be a bit stabby stabby.
