Tower Of Jewels: Echium Wildpretil. Meet Hank. Hank is a Tower Of Jewels: Echium Wildpre. This biennial is drought and deer tolerant. How a plant tolerates a deer seems a bit presumptuous. Maybe Hank hates deer, but who am i to say. I can’t read his mind. Anywhooo.. Hank is a shrubby plant with unbelievable spike-like clusters of flowers. the first year it produces a 2-3 foot wide basal rosette of silvery green long thin leaves. By the second or third year a five to seven foot tall flower stem that will amaze all.

Most of that description is straight from the plant tag, except of course the deer remark. This plant is making me giggle uncontrollably. His final height will be FIVE TO EIGHT FEET!!! A plant that big definitely needs a name, and a strong name at that.

The only water he has gotten so far is from the couple of rainy days we had. One of those days was a pretty good downpour. The soil I put him in was not that great either. It is old used soil that I had from plants that died. With all that neglect, look how happy he is.

I really wish I got three of these guys. I might just go back to the nursery and see if they have more. Keep checking back here to see his progress.

Progress seems to be a bit slow this week with Hank. Or am I just putting too much pressure on him?
